Abstract
Oral communication is the one of the most desired goals that is ought to be achieved in order to become proficient in any language. With that in mind, learning English as a foreign language doesn’t seem to give the learners many opportunities to practice speaking abilities outside of the school context. Achieving proficiency in English in a country where the language is not used daily is an especially demanding task. Moreover, it befalls hard on the young learners who are at the beginning of the process of mastering their first language. Techniques with which beginners acquire foreign language, especially the young learners, have always been interesting to the researchers. One way of trying to understand mental processes of a language learner is through analysing the use of language learning strategies. As a relatively young field of glottodidactics, language learning strategies remain relevant on the grounds of uncovering language development. Yet, not much research has been done related to the use of language learning strategies of young learners and their influence on four language skills. This thesis examines which language learning strategies were most used by 89 young language learners in Croatia, from five different schools in two Croatian counties, learners’ speaking abilities, and the possible relationship between the use of strategies and the oral communication ability at the end of the second grade of primary school. The research was conducted in June 2021 using a SILL questionnaire and an oral interview to test the learners. Their parents were surveyed as well to obtain the data about the possible influence of some other factors on their speaking ability, such as the exposure to English and the family background. Results show statistically significant relationships between strategy use and young learners’ oral proficiency.

Govorna komunikacija osnovno je sredstvo sporazumijevanja, a prema tome i jedan od najprestižnijih ciljeva koji ukazuje na sposobnost vladanja jezikom. S obzirom na to da učenje govorne komunikacije zahtjeva vježbu i upotrebu jezika, koncept učenja engleskoga kao stranoga jezika djeluje kao teško ostvariv cilj jer ne ostavlja učenicima mjesta za služenje jezikom izvan školskoga okruženja. Osobite poteškoće to predstavlja učenicima mlađe školske dobi koji su još u fazi svladavanja materinskog jezika. Vještine i metode pomoću kojih početnici uče i svladavaju strani jezik, osobito učenici mlađe školske dobi, oduvijek su bili iznimno zanimljivi brojnim jezikoslovcima. Strategije učenja i poučavanja jedan su od najvažnijih odraza misaonih procesa kojima se učenici koriste pri učenju jezika. Kao jedno od mlađih istraživačkih potpodručja glotodidaktike, strategije učenja stranoga jezika preostaju vjerodostojni pokazatelji jezičnoga razvoja. Usprkos popularnosti istraživanja vezanih uz strategije učenja jezika, prisutan je nedostatak istraživanja o upotrebi strategija od strane učenika mlađe školske dobi te utjecaj odabira strategija na komunikacijske sposobnosti učenika na engleskome jeziku. Ovaj rad ispituje koje strategije učenja jezika najučestalije koristi 89 učenika mlađe školske dobi iz pet osnovnih škola na području dvije županije u Hrvatskoj, kvalitetu njihove govorne sposobnosti te utječe li odabir strategija na komunikacijske sposobnosti učenika na kraju drugog razreda osnovne škole. Istraživanje, pri kojemu su se SILL upitnik, usmeni intervju kao i anketa za roditelje pokazali krucijalnim instrumentima za njegovu realizaciju, provedeno je u lipnju 2021. godine. U proces istraživanja bili su uključeni i roditelji učenika s namjerom prikupljanja podataka i informacija o vanjskim čimbenicima koji utječu na komunikacijske sposobnosti učenika poput obiteljske pozadine i izloženosti engleskome jeziku. Rezultati istraživanja ukazuju na postojanost povezanosti između strategija učenja jezika i sposobnosti govorne komunikacije kod učenika mlađe školske dobi.
