The main theme of the paper is the life and work of Andrija Štampar. Dr. Andrija Štampar was very interesting person, mostly because of his compassion for ignorant peasants and their problems in the field of health, but also because of his ideology, and the many changes that he has initiated and achieved in his professional activities. Andrija Štampar fought for the right of health education and health care for all the people, and he also laid the basis for the functioning of public health care. One of the basic ideas of his work is the necessity of education about diseases, and the need for hygiene as a prevention of many diseases. His personality and work was characterized by a human approach to people and representing social medicine available to every person, considering that health is the right, not a privilege of every person. During his lifetime, he laid the foundations of social medicine by providing organizational solutions for the education of people in terms of hygiene and disease prevention, as well as the training of medical staff, establishing the School of Public Health, establishing various public health institutions, laying a foundation of health law and numerous guidelines for achieving the fundamental idea – the right for health care for each and every person.
