Memory is a fundamental cognitive process defined as the ability to acquire, retain, and use information, and it is closely linked to the learning process. The information we receive passes through three stages: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Information is held very briefly in sensory memory, then moves to short-term memory where it is retained for a few seconds or minutes, and after processing, it transitions to long-term memory where it can remain for a lifetime. Numerous studies have shown that memory is present even in infants, and they begin to remember from the moment they are born. Although memory is present from birth, older children have a greater understanding of memory itself, use more complex strategies and mnemonic techniques, and study content more thoroughly by focusing attention on new information. For this reason, older children remember better than younger ones. Memory plays a very important role in our daily lives, so it is crucial to improve and develop it in as many ways as possible. The use of mnemonics is one way to enhance memory. Mnemonics are techniques that help retain material that would otherwise likely be forgotten. Their use creates the possibility of easier and faster learning of new information. The aim of this paper is to provide a detailed description of memory, types of memory, the importance of using mnemonics, and to learn more about techniques for improving memory.
