Relevant research from various sources in the field of disability studies and contemporary childhood puts emphasis on the experience of people with disabilities as the only reliable indicator of the quality of inclusion and care for children in general. In this context I wanted to learn more about the experience of growing up of people with impaired hearing, as this population of people with disabilities fights successfully for recognition of their rights and (sub)culture. Data collection was conducted through qualitative methods, that is, by conducting interviews in Croatian Sign Language (CSL). Although people with impaired hearing could have been given the questionnaire, communication in Croatian Sign Language meant to show the immediate recognition of deaf culture. The study included 24 participants, both sexes (M = 54.20%, F = 45.8%), the average chronological age of 53.8 years (min = 24, max = 80, ma = 18.32). Results show that the participants encountered various problems as they grew up: poor support network, discrimination and lack of understanding of the environment and separation from their families for study purposes. Such relationships shut them within their own walls and reduced their ability to access social resources. The results may contribute to better understanding of deaf culture and strengthening of individual perspectives on inclusion in the center of which is a child and his/her personal experience of growing up.
