The purpose of this paper is to describe the speech of the village of Bošnjaci and highlight its phonological, morphological, and lexical features within the framework of the Slavonian dialect. The paper begins with an overview of the Croatian language and its dialects, with particular emphasis on the Shtokavian dialect, which extends across most of Slavonia and parts of Baranja and Srijem, and is therefore closely associated with the Slavonian dialect. Studies of certain local dialects within the Slavonian dialect are based on the living folk language, which dialectologists present and which complements and confirms the claims made about the characteristics of this dialect. The first part of the paper relates to the theoretical overview of the Slavonian dialect, its distribution within the territory of the Republic of Croatia, as well as beyond its borders in areas where it has been recorded, and the division of the Shtokavian dialect necessary for the further description of the dialect, as presented by one of the most prominent Croatian linguists, dialectologist Josip Lisac. In the following chapters, the accents and reflex of "jat" are discussed as the main features of every dialect, followed by an elaboration on other important phonological and morphological features. One of the main components of every dialect and dialectology as a science is the local speech, which is also theoretically addressed in this paper, with an emphasis on the importance of the organic state of speech for understanding the broader linguistic picture determined by the dialect itself. After an introduction to the topic of local speech, the municipality of Bošnjaci is presented. This is followed by an analysis of the local speech based on the audio recording of the speaker Barbara Juzbašić-Matkova. A special feature of the Bošnjaci dialect is its lexicon, which is presented at the end of the paper in the form of a small dictionary containing selected words, expressions, and their meanings.
